GTA 6 Criminal Profile explained: what Rockstar says it grades, and the state you cannot come back from

Criminal Profile is Rockstar’s own name for the system. This page carries what Rob Nelson said about it, what was shown, and what was only described.

Short answer: Criminal Profile grades you as a criminal, not as a person. It rises for crimes committed well and falls for gratuitous violence. There is no on-screen meter; it lives in a menu tab with relationship status. Nelson described a state where the profile gets so low the logo cracks or shatters and you can never come back; that state was described, not demonstrated.

Where this comes from: Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, demonstrated the game to invited creators at Rockstar North in late August 2026 and spoke on the record to IGN and the New York Times. Creators watched; nobody outside Rockstar has played it. Anything marked described below was said, not shown.

What it grades

Nelson was specific that this is not honour and not karma. A clean robbery with nobody killed raises it; gratuitous violence lowers it. His words on the low end, on the record: "a low criminal profile does not mean bad. Okay? Play the game how you want to play the game." The system judges the criminal, not the morality.

Where it lives

Not on the HUD. There is no meter on screen; the profile sits with relationship status in a Jason and Lucia menu tab. Three bars do sit top left: health, stamina and Focus, all of which raise permanently through training and top up temporarily with food and drink.

The shatter state, described

Nelson: "there is a state you can get to where your criminal profile gets so low, so bad that the logo will actually crack or shatter, which means at that point you can never come back." It is permanent for that playthrough. It was not demonstrated in any session, so it stays labelled described rather than shown.

Focus, the ability beside it

Focus is the slow-motion ability. It is not Dead Eye: both protagonists have it, where GTA V gave each character a separate ability. It marks weak points on people and on vehicles, tyres, engine block, fuel tank, and an eye icon sits under the health bar.

Three claims that circulated and are wrong

That creators played it: they watched Nelson play, about two and a half hours of free roam plus An Extended Look. That Nelson explained carjacking risk in detail: that reasoning came from a creator, in the first person, not from Nelson. That there is a relationship bar: the creator who said the phrase corrected himself in the same breath; there is no bar.

How it connects

Criminal Profile is one of three systems the previews put on the record together. The others are on their own pages: the wanted system and stealing cars. The hub’s confirmed list holds only what Rockstar has said itself.

How we know: Rob Nelson, on the record at the Rockstar North creator sessions of late August 2026, as reported in TGG’s first impressions video (27 August 2026) and IGN’s Edinburgh pieces (28 August 2026). Quotes are verbatim from those recordings. Nothing on this page is from a leak.
