Scale · figures as stated, multiples not measurements
How big is the GTA 6 map: about twice GTA 5, three times RDR2, and Vice City twice Los Santos
Rockstar has given multiples, not square miles. This page states the multiples exactly as they were given, and who gave them.
Short answer: Roughly twice GTA 5 and three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2, per Rob Nelson to IGN and the New York Times. Vice City itself is roughly twice Los Santos; Vice City with its suburbs is about eleven times Los Santos with its surrounding areas. A creator counted hundreds of accessible interiors. Nobody has published square miles.
Where this comes from: Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, demonstrated the game to invited creators at Rockstar North in late August 2026 and spoke on the record to IGN and the New York Times. Creators watched; nobody outside Rockstar has played it.

The multiples
The map is roughly twice GTA 5 and three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2; the three-times figure was given to both TGG and the New York Times. Vice City is roughly twice Los Santos, and Vice City with its suburbs about eleven times Los Santos with its surrounding areas. These are Rockstar’s comparisons, not our measurements, and Rockstar has not published dimensions.
Density, not just area
TGG counted hundreds of accessible interiors. Rockstar gave animation counts: well over 600,000 animations against about 55,000 in GTA 5 and about 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2. Nelson said the team has more than doubled since RDR2, that an office in Los Angeles is dedicated almost solely to pedestrian NPCs, and that the vehicle-handling team is made up of race-car drivers.
One developer’s run, not an average
Nelson told the New York Times that his own play-through in February ran about 80 hours, main story plus some optional goals with narrative ramifications. That is one developer’s run, and he said so.
Where the places come from
Dazed’s autumn 2026 deep dive put on the record a research team embedded in Miami plus a decade of visits, over fifty real street artists on the murals, and that the Stockyard district is based on Wynwood. The six named locations, with Rockstar’s postcards and screenshots, are on our map and locations page.
What is still not known
Square miles, the full district list, and anything about what lies beyond the named locations. A cost comparison to the Burj Khalifa circulates as an online rumour; Dazed repeated it and did not confirm it, and neither do we.
How we know: Rob Nelson to IGN (map-size piece, 28 August 2026) and the New York Times (27 August 2026); TGG’s first impressions video (27 August 2026); Dazed, autumn 2026 print issue, quotes on the record from Rockstar North staff. Multiples quoted as given; no dimensions have been published.
