Most Golden Apple guides for Crimson Desert say the hedgehog’s apple counts as stolen, so you need a mask equipped before the pickup prompt appears. We tested it on patch 2.03.02 at both places the guides send you. It isn’t true at either.
Six hedgehogs at two sites, six apples, no mask
We hit three hedgehogs at Eastern Hills in Delesyia, by the Tinkerton farms, and three at Grey Rock Dock in Demeniss with Blinding Flash, then took the apple each time with no mask equipped. The “Golden Apple: Take” prompt appeared normally, the apple went straight into the inventory, and nothing was flagged as stolen. We filmed two further runs at Eastern Hills the next day with the same result.
The apple lands beside the hedgehog or under it; you never need to move the hedgehog
After the stun the apple drops. Sometimes it lands next to the hedgehog; sometimes the hedgehog ends up sitting over it. Either way the Take prompt for the apple is separate from the hedgehog’s own Carry prompt, and you can take the apple without picking the hedgehog up, at both sites.
Pearl Abyss’s 1.16.00 notes added or improved the hedgehog’s interaction animation. What we saw is consistent with that, though the notes don’t describe it.
The mask claim describes the launch build
It appears in guides from March and April 2026, written on the launch build. Players reported on 23 April, the day patch 1.04.00 went live, that the apple no longer counted as stolen. Pearl Abyss’s notes don’t record the change; the only mask line in them is a 1.04.01 fix to hit effects on unattackable NPCs while wearing one. Whatever the launch build did, on the current build no mask is needed.

Players on Steam also report that a site stops giving apples after about 15 and takes a few in-game days to recover. We have not tested that yet and will add it to the gathering guide when we have.
