GTA 6 Codes Are Region-Locked on PS5. Here Is Exactly Where Yours Will Work.

The short version. Buy your physical copy in the same country as your PlayStation account and none of this affects you. Rockstar has now published the full redemption map: PS5 download codes only work with accounts registered in the same region group as the purchase, Xbox codes work anywhere in the world, and codes bought in Japan expire on 8 May 2027 under local regulations. The full region table is below.

When GTA 6 pre-orders opened in June, retailers gave conflicting answers to a question that matters a great deal if you import games: will the download code in the box actually work in your country? Because the physical version ships with a code rather than a disc, a code that will not redeem is not an inconvenience. It is a copy of the game you cannot play.

Rockstar has now answered the question directly, on its own support pages rather than through retailers. The rules are clear, they are stricter on one platform than the other, and one country gets a deadline nobody else has.

The rule, in one sentence

A PS5 code must be redeemed by a PlayStation account registered in the same region group where the code was purchased; an Xbox code can be redeemed anywhere.

The asymmetry is not Rockstar being generous to one side. It follows from how the two platform ecosystems handle account regions: PlayStation Network ties store redemption to account country, and Xbox does not. Rockstar’s own recommendation is the simplest possible version of the advice: buy the game in the country your platform account is registered in.

The full PS5 redemption map

Rockstar groups countries into nine redemption regions. A code bought in one group redeems only on accounts registered in that group.

Two practical readings of that table. First, the biggest group is forgiving: a code bought in Germany works on a French, Indian or South African account, because they share the Rest of EMEA and Asia group. Second, the single-country groups are absolute. A UK code is useless on an Irish account, even though the Irish account could redeem a code bought anywhere from Iceland to New Zealand.

Japan’s code has an expiry date

Buried in the same support update is a rule unique to Japan: codes purchased there expire 170 days after the issuance date, which Rockstar fixes as the 19 November launch. That puts the deadline at 8 May 2027, and Rockstar attributes it to local regulations rather than policy choice.

For most buyers this is trivia. For anyone in Japan planning to shelve a sealed copy, it is not: the code inside stops working in May whether the box was opened or never touched. A sealed Japanese copy of GTA 6 is a collectible with a half-life.

Why this matters more without a disc

None of this would carry much weight if the box contained a disc, because a disc installs regardless of account region. It does not. The physical version of GTA 6 is a code in a box, which means the redemption rules above are the entire product. That decision has already shaped the pre-order market, where digital editions top the PlayStation charts in nearly every region, and it is why we treat code rules as launch-critical information rather than fine print.

The codes themselves become usable on 12 November, when physical copies start shipping and pre-loading opens at local midnight. Redeem early and the game downloads before launch; the code-in-box version was built for exactly that.

What to do before you buy

Buy in the country of your platform account and stop reading. If you must import: importing on Xbox is safe anywhere, importing on PS5 is safe only inside your account’s region group per the table above, and importing from Japan means your code dies on 8 May 2027. If a retailer cannot tell you which region its stock was issued for, that is a reason to buy elsewhere.
