Sony Is Killing the PlayStation Disc — Here’s Why, and What It Actually Means

It’s official: the PlayStation discless console era begins in January 2028. Sony will stop manufacturing physical discs for new PlayStation games in January 2028. New releases will ship digitally on PlayStation Store — and at retail, most likely as code-in-box products rather than discs.

Why Sony is going discless

The math has been heading here for a decade: roughly 85% of PlayStation revenue is already digital, and industry tracking puts digital game sales around 80% overall. Discs mean pressing plants, logistics, retail margins, and returns — costs attached to a shrinking slice of the business. Killing the disc converts Sony’s weakest channel into its strongest one, where it also keeps a bigger cut of every sale.

The knock-on effects

Analysts read the announcement as a strong signal that the standard PS6 won’t include a disc drive at all, with the console expected — unconfirmed, worth stressing — around the end of 2028. Meanwhile the PS3 and Vita storefronts wind down in stages through July 2027, and Sony has begun pushing reminder notices to PS5 disc-drive owners.

The PlayTheory take

The backlash — preservation, resale, ownership — is justified, but it’s aimed at the wrong target. The disc has been a download key with extra steps for years; most “physical” games are unplayable without a day-one patch. The real fight is what digital ownership means: your library’s lifespan is now exactly as long as a storefront’s. If preservation matters to you, that’s the policy battle worth having — before January 2028, not after.
