Grand Theft Auto 6 dominated this week’s conversation, from side by side technical breakdowns of its RAGE engine visuals to Rob Nelson’s own words on how the Jason and Lucia romance system works. Rockstar also put its name on NoPixel, the biggest GTA roleplay server. CD Projekt Red is staffing up on its next unannounced project while insisting The Witcher 4 remains the priority, Nintendo dropped a surprise free update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Sony ran two State of Play broadcasts in one day. Here is what actually mattered, and what is still just noise.
GTA 6: The Graphics Talk and the Romance System Explained
The biggest technical story of the week was a detailed comparison of Grand Theft Auto 6’s visuals against GTA 5’s Enhanced Edition on maxed out PC settings, examining how far Rockstar has pushed the RAGE engine, as covered in this breakdown video. That followed close behind An Extended Look, Rockstar’s own term for the footage, that outside analysis called some of the most impressive real time game graphics yet, per this technical analysis.
On the gameplay side, Rob Nelson, who runs Rockstar North with Aaron Garbut, told IGN that players who are not interested in the romance between Jason and Lucia are not required to pursue it: “Don’t bother with it if you aren’t. Up to you,” as reported by GameSpot. A separate GameSpot piece covered the Criminal Profile’s point of no return for players who take crime too far, per this report; that is the shatter state Nelson described in the previews, which we covered in detail.
Why it matters: with GTA VI locked for November 19, 2026, every scrap of gameplay detail gets dissected, and Rockstar is choosing to let systems like romance and the Criminal Profile speak for themselves rather than oversell them.
The PlayTheory take: an optional romance system paired with a consequence mechanic for extreme criminal behaviour suggests Leonida will react to how you play. That is a smarter design bet than forcing every player down the same narrative path. For everything else we know so far, visit our GTA VI hub.
On a lighter note: the superfan who went viral in June for measuring oxygen levels outside Rockstar North, on the theory that more breathing meant more developers crunching, got a callback. Italian YouTuber Mike ShowSha, one of the creators invited to Rockstar ahead of the Netflix showcase, says employees told him the oxygen measuring really happened: “they told me this at Rockstar, so I’d tend to believe them,” in IGN’s machine translation, per IGN’s writeup. The fan’s stunt is on the record from June; the part where Rockstar staff acknowledged it rests on one YouTuber’s account of the conversation.
Rockstar Puts Its Name on NoPixel
Rockstar introduced NoPixel V on September 1 through its own Newswire, formally attaching itself to the largest GTA roleplay community ahead of GTA VI, per Rockstar’s announcement. Rockstar’s history with roleplay servers has been arm’s length at best, so a first-party introduction is a change of posture.
Why it matters: roleplay is one of GTA V’s biggest audiences on Twitch, and Rockstar formalising the relationship two and a half months before GTA VI says it wants that audience inside the tent at launch.
CD Projekt Red Staffs Up on Mystery Project While The Witcher Remake Waits
CD Projekt Red is expanding the team on its unannounced project, internally known as Project Hadar, which IGN reports now numbers over 30 people, according to IGN’s report. PC Gamer separately confirmed that both Hadar and the previously known Sirius project are still happening, though not coming any time soon, per PC Gamer’s update.
Meanwhile, the standalone Witcher remake is on hold while the studio focuses on The Witcher 4 and The Witcher 3’s new expansion, Songs of the Past, CD Projekt Red confirmed to IGN, per this report. The studio also told PC Gamer that charging existing Witcher 3 owners for the remastered edition “was never a question we asked ourselves”, per PC Gamer’s report.
Why it matters: CD Projekt Red is managing at least four projects at once, The Witcher 4, the Witcher 3 expansion, Hadar, and Sirius, while reporting a strong first half of 2026 financially, per GameSpot’s earnings coverage. That is a lot of plates spinning for a studio that has historically struggled with overlapping deadlines.
The PlayTheory take: pausing the Witcher remake to protect The Witcher 4’s development is the correct call, and giving away the Witcher 3 remaster for free is smart goodwill after Cyberpunk 2077’s rocky launch years. Whether Hadar and Sirius stay vapourware or become real announcements is the thing to watch into 2027.
Square Enix Denies Going Private Rumours
Square Enix issued a denial after reports and a share price jump suggested the company was exploring a move to go private, according to GameSpot’s coverage and IGN’s report. This remains an unconfirmed rumour that the company has explicitly denied, not a confirmed process.
Why it matters: Square Enix’s share price reacting at all shows investor appetite for consolidation talk in the industry is still high, even when the company itself is on the record refusing the premise.
The PlayTheory take: with the company’s denial on record, nothing here changes for Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts fans right now.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Gets a Free 8 Player Split Screen Update
Nintendo quietly shipped a free update adding 8 player split screen to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, its best selling Switch title, according to GameSpot’s report.
Why it matters: this is a genuinely rare move, a mature, best selling game getting a substantial new feature for free years after launch, extending its shelf life ahead of Switch 2’s continued rollout.
The PlayTheory take: it is a savvy way to keep the golden goose relevant while Kirby Air Riders and other Switch 2 titles compete for couch co op attention. Kirby Air Riders is currently discounted for Switch 2, described by IGN as playing like “Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros had a baby that Kirby then ate”, per IGN’s deal roundup.
The September 3 State of Play Dated Final Fantasy VII Revelation and a GTA VI Controller
Sony ran two broadcasts on September 3, a State of Play and a State of Play Japan, per the PlayStation Blog. The dates: Final Fantasy VII Revelation closes the remake trilogy on April 8, 2027, Until Dawn 2 lands January 28, 2027, and Marvel’s Wolverine got its final trailer ahead of September 15, per Game Informer’s recap.
The GTA note: Sony announced a Grand Theft Auto VI Limited Edition DualSense, in white and black variants, releasing alongside the game on November 19. Dates worth tracking are on our release calendar.
Why it matters: back to back showcases a week after Gamescom, with dated first party and third party games, says Sony’s 2027 slate is further along than the quiet summer suggested.
