An Extended Look at Grand Theft Auto VI premiered on Netflix on Thursday 27 August at 3 p.m. ET and runs 26 minutes and 47 seconds, timed by us off the premiere. Netflix’s own app listing said 26 minutes and one first-hand account made it 27, so both were rounding the same reel. Rockstar has confirmed on its Newswire that it reaches the official YouTube channel and the Grand Theft Auto VI site at 9 p.m. ET the same day. If you have not watched it yet, this piece stays clear of story beats.

Rockstar says it is all in-game footage on PlayStation 5

Rockstar states the presentation was “captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5”, and the studio calls it “the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet”. The line names PlayStation 5 without distinguishing between the base console and the Pro, and nothing on screen in the presentation settles it either, so anyone telling you which machine this ran on is inferring it.

The launch date did not move. Rockstar closes the post with 19 November on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

What the footage actually shows

We watched the Netflix premiere in full before writing this. Everything below is what is in the presentation, not what someone else says is in it, with one exception flagged where it appears.

Push Square reports the six-star wanted level returns, after GTA V capped at five, and the meter in the presentation confirms it. It sits at four stars through the chase, so the upper tiers are not decoration. The slow-motion mode is called Focus, and it is worth using the name rather than reaching for Red Dead. TGG, who watched two and a half hours of the game at Rockstar North, says plainly that Focus “is different to dead eye. It’s not the exact same thing. It’s similar, but very different at the same time.” Both Jason and Lucia have it, where GTA V gave each protagonist a separate ability, and besides slowing time it marks weak points on people and on cars, the tyres, the engine block, the fuel tank. In the presentation the target is picked out point by point, red on the head and upper arm, yellow on the elbow and hands, grading the shot by what it would cost rather than lighting the whole body. Focus is one of three bars at the top left, alongside health and stamina; all three can be raised permanently through training and side activities, or topped up briefly with food and drink.

Push Square also notes Red Dead Redemption 2-style prompts for talking to people rather than a single context button, and a karma system that moves on what you do, petting a dog one way and a heist the other. On character swapping it reports the switch is instant when Jason and Lucia are together and takes a few seconds when they are apart.

TheGamer adds that the character you are not controlling fights alongside you rather than standing about, that cars can be taken with a slim jim instead of a broken window, and that burning a vehicle can help shake the police. The last of those does not hold up. In that sequence the pair ditch a black sedan for a maroon van and the wanted level sits at four stars through the swap, so changing or destroying the car does not clear the heat on its own here. Whatever burning a vehicle does, losing the police is not it. Raul Bautista, one of the names Rockstar gave Dazed on Wednesday, turns up in a chase.

The activity list being reported reads like Red Dead Redemption 2 in Florida: track racing, jet skis, scuba diving, weightlifting, and sitting in front of a television that runs its own adverts.

What this settles on our own ledger

Three things we had logged as unconfirmed can now move, with the caveat that they rest on the video rather than on a Rockstar fact sheet. The body and life-sim systems Rockstar described to Dazed on Wednesday are visibly in the game. The couple mechanic works in motion rather than as a menu swap. And the wanted level question resolves at six stars.

Three things did not happen. There is no PC announcement. There is no word on GTA Online’s future, which matters to anyone still grinding it. And Rockstar did not address the leaks again, having said its piece on Wednesday.

What we are doing next

Our scorecard of every claim in the Rumour Ledger against what the Extended Look actually shows runs in Friday’s edition, grading the runtime and Trailer 3 claims logged in the August 7 ledger and the leak-comparison claims from Ed. 6. The footage itself joins the GTA 6 gallery tonight, sourced and dated, as promised when the date landed. The GTA 6 hub carries the confirmed facts as they firm up, and the Dazed interview breakdown is the best companion piece to this one.
