GTA 6 Pre-Order Numbers Fact-Checked: The Real Figure Beats the Fake One

Claims that GTA 6 pre-orders have already topped $1 billion are false. A video game market data analyst group says so directly, per Eurogamer — calling the numbers circulating online “incorrect” and “absurd.”

But don’t mistake that for GTA 6 underperforming. The same report says GTA 6 has already generated more than $260 million in pre-orders, and calls it the strongest pre-order campaign ever recorded. That number isn’t new to us. It’s the same figure we flagged in our original Newzoo breakdown yesterday.

What’s actually confirmed

Here’s the ledger, updated:

Likely

GTA 6 generated $180 million in pre-order revenue in its first week. This figure comes from Newzoo’s market tracking, cited in PlayTheory’s original report. Under our published criteria, analyst measurements cap at Likely — however credible the firm.

Likely

GTA 6 pre-orders now exceed $260 million globally. Two independent reports — our original Newzoo-sourced analysis and a separate analyst firm cited by Eurogamer — now converge on this figure.

Possible

GTA 6 could see $3.25–5.2 billion in launch week revenue. This is a forward projection based on pre-order momentum, not a measured figure — treat it as a range, not a promise.

✗ Debunked

Claim that GTA 6 pre-orders have already crossed $1 billion. An analyst firm explicitly called viral claims like this “incorrect” and “absurd.”

Why the honest number wins

A billion dollars sounds bigger than $260 million. But it’s fake, and fake numbers don’t survive scrutiny — they just give sceptics an easy reason to write off the whole story.

$260 million, confirmed by two separate sources before the game has even shipped, is the actual headline. It’s the strongest pre-order campaign ever tracked by these firms. No inflation required.

The PlayTheory take

We’d rather report the boring, true number than the exciting, fake one. $260 million pre-launch, backed by Newzoo-grade data and now echoed by a second analyst source, is already a historic figure. Chasing the billion-dollar myth just makes the real story easier to dismiss. We’ll keep updating this ledger as harder confirmed sales data lands — follow along on the GTA VI hub.
