THE RUMOUR LEDGER · ED. 7 · 83 DAYS TO GTA VI

Rockstar spent six weeks saying nothing while other people described its game. This week it published 26 minutes of that game and posted a statement about the leaks. Here is every claim from the week of August 22-28, 2026, scored by its evidence.

How to read this

The rules, unchanged: every claim gets a state (Confirmed, Likely, Possible, Unverified, Debunked), every state move needs evidence, and coverage volume is not evidence. For six editions the claims scored here came from leakers, analysts and anonymous accounts. This week four of them come from Rockstar Games, Netflix, Sony and a federal court docket. The evidence base moved from the people describing the game to the people making it.

The ledger

Ten rows this week, four of them state moves. Use the filters to sort by evidence state.

Checked again 31 August 2026. Four claims added below from the Flow Games and ZEIT previews published after this edition first ran, each marked “Added 31 August”. Nothing already scored has moved.

ROCKSTAR LEAK STATEMENT

Rockstar has acknowledged the GTA VI leaks on the record. New claim, entered Confirmed. At 7:26 a.m. ET on August 26, Rockstar posted a signed statement to its X account. It names the material as “videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay”, calls the leak “heartbreaking for our team”, says the studio is “very sorry that everything has taken as long as it has”, puts the game “nearly there”, and concedes that “the intended game experience may now be impacted by some spoilers”. It asks players to wait for November 19. It is the first time Rockstar has gone on record about a leak of its own material. What it does not do is date the build, describe the scope of the breach, or mention the leaker.

EXTENDED LOOK AIRED

An Extended Look premiered on August 27 and runs 26:47. Scheduled trigger from Ed. 5, now Confirmed and closed. Netflix at 3 p.m. ET, then the official Rockstar YouTube channel and the Grand Theft Auto VI site at 9 p.m. ET the same day. We timed it at 26 minutes 47 seconds off the premiere; Netflix’s listing rounded to 26m. Rockstar’s Newswire says it was “captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5”, and says nothing about frame rate or performance modes. November 19 reaffirmed. Rockstar’s noun is An Extended Look; the word trailer came from Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick.

THREE-EPISODE LISTING

The Extended Look is a three-part series running about 67 minutes in total. Entered Unverified in Ed. 5, held in Ed. 6, now Debunked. Netflix published the thing itself: one title, one runtime, no parts. The deleted Netflix Portugal screenshot was a staging artefact or it was wrong. This is the first Debunked entry on a claim the ledger entered itself rather than inherited. It was correctly labelled for two weeks and it was still wrong, which is what the states are for.

SUBPOENA SCOPE

Take-Two’s Microsoft subpoena seeks OneDrive contents and device IDs for everyone who posted in three Discord servers. Confirmed in Ed. 6, scope wider than first reported. Ed. 6 recorded DMCA subpoena petitions filed in the Southern District of New York on August 20 against Microsoft and Discord. The Microsoft petition, filed by Dale Cendali and Joshua Simmons of Kirkland & Ellis and served on Microsoft as GitHub’s provider, seeks MachineGuid and MSA device identifiers, registration and last-login IP addresses, phone numbers, linked Google and Xbox connections, and OneDrive contents for every account that posted in Odyssey.gg, “! Odyssey” and DarkViperAU since June 1. Matthew Judge, who streams as DarkViperAU, denied involvement on X: “I don’t know anything.” The Ed. 6 caveat stands: being named in the filing is not an accusation. Microsoft and Discord have until September 4.

Moves oncompliance, objection or a missed deadline on September 4, or a ruling on scope.
PREVIEW HANDS-OFF

No journalist played GTA 6. Rob Nelson played it in front of them. New claim, entered Confirmed. The embargo lifted on August 27 alongside the Netflix premiere. Three sources agree the Rockstar North event was hands-off. TGG corrects himself mid-sentence: “we played, well, Rob played 2 and 1/2 hours of GTA 6 free roam while I watched.” The New York Times describes Nelson picking up a controller and playing while its reporter watched. IGN calls its own Edinburgh session a hands-off demo in print. Several outlets, TechSpot among them, have described the event as hands-on. It was not. Every “it feels responsive” in circulation is a judgement about footage of someone else driving, and a good number of the design rationales attributed to Rockstar are previewers reasoning aloud about what they were shown.

MAP SCALE AND LENGTH

The map is roughly twice GTA 5 and three times Red Dead 2, and Nelson’s own run took about 80 hours. New claim, entered Confirmed, attributed. These score Confirmed because Rob Nelson said them on the record, not because they are widely repeated. To TGG: roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s map, Vice City itself roughly twice Los Santos, and Vice City with its surrounding suburbs about eleven times Los Santos with its surrounding areas. To both TGG and the New York Times: three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2. To the Times: his own play-through in February ran about 80 hours, covering the main story and some optional goals with narrative ramifications. Read that one carefully. It is one developer’s run, in February, by a man who knows where everything is, and it is not a stated average. Rockstar also puts animation at well over 600,000, against about 55,000 in GTA 5 and about 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2. TGG adds “hundreds” of accessible interiors.

Moves onRockstar publishing a figure in square kilometres, or a post-launch measurement.
FRAME RATE

The official Extended Look footage runs at 30 fps. New claim, entered Likely. Rockstar named the capture platform and nothing else: no console model, no frame rate, no performance modes on any platform, and nothing about PlayStation 5 Pro. The 30 fps figure is the content creator Davy Jones’s read of the released video, and several other analysts landed in the same place. A reasonable inference from a compressed upload is Likely, not Confirmed.

Moves onRockstar or Sony publishing performance modes, or a frame-time analysis of the official upload that shows its method.
CONSOLE FRAME RATE

The console builds currently run at 30 fps, with no decision on a 60 fps mode. Added 31 August, entered Likely. Separate from the row above: this is Rob Nelson describing the build, not an inference from the video. He told Flow Games in July that PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series builds run at 30 fps and that he would need to ask the technical team whether a 60 fps option could come at launch or later. On the record from Rockstar North’s co-studio head, relayed through a Portuguese-language outlet, so Likely rather than Confirmed. Our piece.

Moves onRockstar or Sony publishing performance modes, or Nelson’s words in English on the record.
FIRST PERSON

There is no full first-person mode, only first-person aiming for some weapons. Added 31 August, entered Possible. This is Flow Games’ own summary of its visit, not a quoted Nelson line, and no other outlet has reported it either way.

Moves onRockstar showing or naming a camera option, or a second outlet putting the question to Nelson.
SKATEBOARDING AND SURFING

No skateboarding, no surfing at launch, and fewer minigames than GTA V. Added 31 August, entered Likely. Nelson told Flow Games skateboarding was discussed and dropped because the mechanic could not be built to the standard of the rest of the game in time, that surfing is out “at least for now”, and that GTA V’s minigames were mostly below the bar the studio now sets. Relayed by Davy Jones on tape from his notes, so Likely.

Moves onRockstar listing activities on its own site, or the launch build.
STREET WIDTH

Vice City’s streets are about 15 percent narrower than GTA V’s. Added 31 August, entered Likely. Nelson’s figure, given to ZEIT in July and quoted in German; he also told IGN the streets are “narrower, and more realistic in terms of scale” without a number. One outlet carries the percentage, so Likely. Our piece.

Moves onA second outlet quoting the figure, or Rockstar publishing map scale.
GTA ONLINE WEEKLY

The week of August 27 to September 3 carries 6X on selected Drift and Transform Races, across August 28 to 30 only. Rolling claim, entered Likely. Alongside the 6X window: 3X on Random Transform Races, and 2X GTA$, RP and LS Car Meet Rep on Drift Races and Auto Shop Robbery Contracts. The Kortz Center Heist rotates three primary targets, Breathless, Twindifference and Teckels. The podium car is the Karin Sultan Classic, normally GTA$1,718,000. GTA+ members can claim the Gallivanter Warden free and take 2X on FIB Files through September 9. Discounts run to 30% on a set including the Cheval Taipan, Vapid Flash GT and Invetero Coquette D5. Likely rather than Confirmed for one boring reason: we transcribed these from community coverage rather than reading them off the Newswire, and weekly figures drift in transcription. If you are grinding this weekend, the 6X window is the one to plan around.

GTA ONLINE IN VI

GTA Online’s relationship to GTA VI is still unstated. Carried, still Unverified. Seventh straight week of nothing. Twenty-six minutes of official footage, a full developer press cycle and an on-record statement about the leaks, and not one word about online. No confirmed launch window, no confirmed pricing model, and no confirmed relationship to the GTA Online running today. Everything circulating, including the long-running claim that online will be sold separately, traces back to uncorroborated 2025 forum posts. We log the silence, because seven weeks of it before a November launch is itself information.

Moves ona Rockstar Newswire post, or a Take-Two remark on an earnings call or at an investor event.
PS PLUS SEPTEMBER

The September PlayStation Plus Essential leak was right on three games and missed a fourth. Non-GTA claim, entered Confirmed, partially. On August 25, Billbil-kun at Dealabs named Sniper Elite: Resistance, Chained Echoes and Wobbly Life. Sony’s own blog confirmed the lineup the next day and added MLB The Show 26. Three of four, with an omission rather than an error, which is roughly the accuracy this leaker has sustained for years. Scoring it a clean hit would flatter it and scoring it a miss would be dishonest. This is what a reliable leaker’s record looks like up close, and it is the calibration point for every insider claim elsewhere in this ledger.

Moves onnothing.

What did not move

  • Footage age. Likely, unmoved. Nothing changed the evidence for the age of CyberLeek’s clips. It changed what is possible: there is now official footage of the same game to compare against. The frame-by-frame threads since Thursday night mostly compare compressed uploads of a compressed leak against a compressed stream, and none has shown its method. Rockstar’s statement named the material as GTA VI gameplay and said nothing about when it was captured.
  • Playable build. Unverified, carried from Ed. 6. No new substantiation that the leaker holds one.
  • Preload, November 12. Re-verified against Rockstar’s support page, unchanged.
  • RDR2 upgrade. Unverified, third straight quiet week.
  • 2K football rival. Small Axe Studios, no movement since entry. Carried Unverified.

Struck, but tracked

Still Debunked and still resurfacing: the $1 billion pre-order figure, the August 6 trailer that never was, the site change read as a launch signal, and the Kortz Center error we made ourselves in Ed. 3. If you see them this week dressed in leak-era clothes, they are the same claims.

The PlayTheory take

The interesting thing about this week is not that Rockstar showed the game. It is that Rockstar spoke, and what it chose to say. The statement named the leaked material as Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay, conceded that spoilers are now out there, and apologised for how long everything has taken. It said nothing about how old the build is, how far the breach reached, or who took it. That is a company answering the question it can afford to answer and stepping around the two that would either confirm the scale of the breach or give the operation the attention it is asking for.

The second thing worth holding onto is the shape of the preview cycle. A hands-off demonstration produced a week of impressions written in the first person about how the game feels, and an aggregated detail list that went round every timeline inside four hours. Nobody in that room drove a car. That does not make the impressions worthless, and Nelson’s on-record figures are the most substantial information we have had about scale since the announcement. It does mean the confident sentences about handling are describing a video, and that a lot of design rationale is being put in Rockstar’s mouth by people who were reasoning aloud about what they had watched.

Against both, the ledger’s own record this week is mixed and worth stating: the three-episode listing we carried at Unverified for two weeks is now Debunked. It was correctly labelled, it never appeared here as fact, and it was still wrong.
